Shares of Biodesix fell after the company cut its full-year outlook, citing operational shortcomings that hurt growth during the recent quarter.
The stock lost roughly a third of its value in premarket trading Friday. Through Thursday's close, shares have roughly tripled year to date.
The company before the bell reported a narrowed loss for third-quarter of $8.03 million, or 75 cents a share, compared with a loss of $8.72 million, or $1.16 a share, a year earlier. The quarterly loss was in line with analysts' expectations, according to FactSet.
Total revenues climbed 10% to $24 million but missed Wall Street estimates for $27.5 million.
"Growth was below our expectations," Chief Executive Scott Hutton said.
He added the factors that hurt the quarter--including fewer contributing sales representatives than planned, which limited new physician and account growth, as well as greater-than-anticipated seasonality that reduced ordering frequency--were largely related to timing and execution.
"We have identified the drivers, taken corrective actions, and entered the fourth quarter with a larger sales organization positioned for improved execution," Hutton said.
"Early fourth-quarter trends indicate accelerating new customer acquisition, continued growth across our established customer base, and broader physician engagement."
For the year, Biodesix now expects total revenue of $101 million to $103 million. That compares with a prior outlook of $108 million to $114 million, as well as Wall Street models for $110.5 million.
