U.S. Steel is spending $1.9 billion to build a new direct reduced iron facility in Arkansas.
The steel producer said Wednesday that the new facility, which will be built at Big River Steel Works in Osceola, Ark., will the be the first of its kind in the U.S.
The facility will link the company's mining operations, its EAF feedstock creation and its steel production at Big River Steel Works, the company said. The facility also will vertically integrate direct reduced iron production at Big River Steel Works, the company said.
The project will employ about 200 full-time Big River Steel Works employees and 35 full-time contractors, the company said. At its peak, the project also will support an estimated 2,000 construction jobs, the company said.
