Now the exchange rate on the streets of Bali is 11,900, which is unheard of,” she said.She recently paid for a villa booked for later this year which is priced at 3.5 million rupiah per night.“This would usually be around $350 Australian, but I only paid $276 per night. People are definitely getting more bang for their buck,” she said.“I’ve also noticed customers are paying (Bali Kidz Hire) in rupiah via Wise, and getting a good discount. Some are for orders that are towards the end of the year, in case the rate goes down.”The strong Australian dollar and a weak Indonesian currency, caused by global turmoil and the country’s bleak economic outlook, is behind the trend.Indonesia Institute founder Ross Taylor said with soaring fuel costs at home, Bali had become even more appealing for many West Australians.“If you look at the costs of a (local holiday) Bali becomes highly attractive. It’s a great time to holiday in Bali and take advantage of the exchange rate,” he said.But it came at a cost to the Indonesian economy, which is suffering as a result of the oil crisis, inflation and rising unemployment.Bali has become a holiday bargain thanks to the exchange rate. Credit: Supplied/TheWest“There are bargains to be had, and Bali is functioning very well despite the crisis, but remember the locals are doing it tough, so be kind,” he said.Mr Taylor said the favourable exchange rate could be counteracted by any increases to flight costs amid the ongoing fuel shortage.“Some are cancelling because they don’t want to get caught there. It’s delicately balanced, and the secret in a situation like this is to shop around.”According to the Skyscanner website, return airfares between Perth and Denpasar airports during the upcoming July school holidays start from around $580 per person.Mrs Kavanagh said while she had received cancellations from Europe-based customers due to global tensions, tourism in Bali was as strong as ever when it came to Australian and New Zealand families.“We’re not seeing a slow down at all. These school holidays were busier than ever, we would have helped over 600 families,” she said.While the price of eating out has increased in parts of Bali, with areas such as Seminyak and Canggu home to a plethora of fine dining restaurants and exclusive resorts, Ms Kavanagh said it was still great value for money.It comes as Wall Street’s S&P 500 hit record highs on Thursday as investors bet on tensions easing in the Middle East.Commonwealth Bank of Australia strategist Carol Kong said the trend “may extend a bit further while this optimism lasts.”“But we doubt they can sustain for long given the high risk of a breakdown in negotiations (between the US and Iran).
