This allowed the European Union to label prosecco as a protected Geographical Indication (GI).Katherine Brown from Brown Brothers says the news was ‘fantastic’. Credit: SuppliedBe the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on GoogleA GI acts as a form of intellectual property that protects goods, and identifies produce originating from a specific region, for example, champagne coming only from the Champagne region in France.“They said that the grape variety is no longer called prosecco, the region is called Prosecco,” Brown said.“Meanwhile, we’re over here in Australia, we’re making prosecco from what we have purchased called prosecco grapes.“And it’s quite common practice for Australian wine industry to bring different grapes over from Europe and start making that wine here.”Australian winemakers are allowed to continue to use the term prosecco for locally made and sold wines. Credit: AAPBrown said Australian winemakers “really dug our heels in ever since” and began fighting to continue to call the their wine prosecco, however, producers faced “huge uncertainty”.“It’s a growing category. It’s a $200 million industry here in Australia,” she said.“We just really wanted that certainty so our grape growers could go out and plant more prosecco grapes, so our consumers can understand what they’re picking up on shelf.”On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced the conclusion of negotiations, confirming the right for Australian winemakers to keep making and selling prosecco domestically had been preserved.The removal of most Australian tariffs on imports from the EU will also make things such as European spirits, biscuits, chocolates and pasta cheaper to buy in Australia.Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
