It’s a very short window. We can’t delay this. When the crop has to go in the ground, it’s got to go in the ground,” Seabrook said.Bowen revealed that of the 81 fuel ships due to arrive in Australia in April, six have been cancelled. Major suppliers in Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia are under intense demand, forcing importers to look to the United States, Mexico and India instead.The crisis has been exacerbated by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted the passage of 20 per cent of the world’s oil.“I think you should always expect Australians to be concerned when they see oil ships being bombed on their televisions at night,” Bowen said.Shadow energy minister Dan Tehan criticised the government’s response.Be the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on Google“I think we should be worried about it because Chris Bowen doesn’t seem to know what is going on,” he said.The federal opposition has called for the government to prioritise fuel supply to areas that need it most.“Why aren’t they identifying where the shortages are and making sure the fuel gets there?” Tehan said.Dan Tehan and Chris Bowen. Credit: 7NEWSThe Energy Minister has the power to direct fuel supplies under the Liquid Fuel Emergency Act, but Bowen said it’s not needed yet.“It’s never been invoked ever, not through the first two Gulf Wars, COVID,” he said. “It’s not designed to be invoked lightly.”Meanwhile, unions in Australia’s most populous state are calling on the NSW government to make Sydney’s public transport network free or heavily discounted to ease pressure on fuel supplies as the war overseas continues to drive petrol prices to record highs.The Rail, Tram and Bus Union says slashing fares would get city commuters out of their cars and free up fuel supplies for farmers and trucking in regional areas where they’re needed most.The push comes as Sydney’s average petrol price hit around $2.40 per litre for regular unleaded and almost $2.83 for diesel, with some service stations running dry amid broader supply concerns.The crisis shows little sign of abating. Or we could adopt the Queensland model and reduce it to something like 50 cent fares.”“This is something that the government could do with the flick of a switch [that would also provide] instant cost of living relief.“This is a global fuel crisis we haven’t seen since the 1970s and they’re talking about it being worse.
