Substance Aside, Washington Wants to Know: How Long Will Trump Speak? -- WSJ

One of the big questions about tonight's State of the Union address: how long will President Trump go? If Trump speaks for more than one hour and 40 minutes, it would beat his own time from last year. Historians will note, however, that last year's speech was given shortly after he took office and is technically known as a joint address to Congress-not a State of the Union.

Bill Clinton holds the record for a State of the Union address, speaking for one hour and 29 minutes in January 2000, according to the American Presidency Project, which tracks speech lengths. Clinton also holds the No. 2 slot, with his 1995 address that went for an hour and 25 minutes.

Presidents used to go short: Richard Nixon's address in 1972 was just 29 minutes. For some context, the average length of a professional baseball game last season was about 2 hours and 38 minutes, as of last September, according to Major League Baseball statistics.
