PowerX, Inc. and Internet Initiative Japan (TYO:3774) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore battery storage systems and containerized data center solutions, according to a Friday filing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The partnership will study integrating large-scale battery energy storage systems with container data centers to support AI-driven computing demand, distributed processing, and more stable power supply. Areas under review include joint development of battery-integrated container data centers, use cases for distributed digital infrastructure, and power utilization frameworks using stored energy.
The companies are also considering applications such as supplying stored electricity to servers and selling surplus power during periods of high demand, reflecting volatility in Japan's electricity market.
PowerX will contribute its battery storage and container technologies, including its containerized data center product Mega Power DC, while IIJ will provide operational know-how from its long-running container-based data center operations.
