Ford Motor's (F) chief executive Jim Farley said Tuesday that Chinese subsidies and the regulatory environment are "wildcards" for the auto industry.

Speaking on Ford's earnings conference call, Farley said that the company will have to "future-proof" its cost around this pricing reality and that this is a situation that every original equipment manufacturer will have to face.

Farley said the company's export business from China will be "opportunistic" on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and hybrids, depending on what customers in countries such as Australia, South Africa or Brazil want.
