Rep. Tom Suozzi (D., N.Y.), one of seven Democrats who crossed party lines last week to support a Department of Homeland Security funding bill, told supporters he regretted the vote.
"I failed to view the DHS funding vote as a referendum on the illegal and immoral conduct of ICE in Minneapolis," Suozzi wrote in an email to his campaign list. "I have long been critical of ICE's unlawful behavior and I must do a better job of demonstrating that."
Suozzi had previously defended the measure as necessary to avoid a government shutdown and fund agencies such as FEMA and the Coast Guard, even as he criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement's tactics in Minnesota and other cities.
The DHS funding bill passed the House last week 220-207. Democratic Reps. Suozzi, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Laura Gillen of New York, Don Davis of North Carolina, and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas joined Republicans in backing the measure.
Gonzalez also sought to distance himself from ICE funding in a video posted to X on Monday. "Some of y'all called me asking why I voted for that DHS funding," he said. "Well, let me make it clear, it was not to fund ICE." He echoed calls for further investigation into ICE's conduct.
