Dow Jones
Yesterday

0831 GMT - Gains for European banks lift indexes at the open, even as basic materials and energy stocks slip. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 climbs 0.3%, as Sage is up 2% after surging over 5% at the open on first-quarter results, while London's financial-services stocks gain, with HSBC up 1.85%. In Paris, the CAC 40 climbs 0.2%--led by Saint-Gobain, up 3.15%--though energy and materials companies fall as traders await a business update from luxury bellwether LVMH after the close. The Italian FTSE MIB is 0.6% higher as banks largely gain, with Banca Mediolanum up 1.75%. Spain's IBEX 35 climbs 0.3%, as gains for banks are offset by losses for telecomms and basic-material stocks. Meanwhile, the German DAX is up 0.2%, boosted by energy stocks, with Siemens Energy 1.3% higher, though automakers slip. (josephmichael.stonor@wsj.com)
