If you want to know who really controls Lotus Resources Limited (ASX:LOT), then you'll have to look at the makeup of its share registry.  The group holding the most number of shares in the company, around 56% to be precise, is institutions.   In other words, the group stands to gain the most (or lose the most) from their investment into the company.  And institutional investors endured the highest losses after the company's share price fell by 11% last week.  Needless to say, the recent loss which further adds to the one-year loss to shareholders of 35% might not go down well especially with this category of shareholders.   Institutions or \"liquidity providers\" control large sums of money and therefore, these types of investors usually have a lot of influence over stock price movements. Insider Ownership Of Lotus Resources The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count.  Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.  I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.   Shareholders would probably be interested to learn that insiders own shares in Lotus Resources Limited.   It has a market capitalization of just AU$421m, and insiders have AU$9.3m worth of shares, in their own names.   Some would say this shows alignment of interests between shareholders and the board. But it might be worth checking if those insiders have been selling.   General Public Ownership The general public-- including retail investors -- own 34% stake in the company, and hence can't easily be ignored.   While this size of ownership may not be enough to sway a policy decision in their favour, they can still make a collective impact on company policies.
