MW These stocks have been hit hard in 2025 but could surge by as much as 57% from here

By Philip van Doorn

Downtrodden names expected to come roaring back include Adobe, Block and Salesforce

These are among the stocks in the S&P 500 that have fallen at least 20% this year but that are favored by analysts who expect them to rise by double digits over the next 12 months.

Despite some recent jitters, we are still in a bull market for the S&P 500. But plenty of stocks have tumbled this year. For bargain hunters, we have listed stocks that have declined significantly and are expected by analysts to soar from current prices. Then we have taken the process a step further by looking at projected growth rates for sales and earnings in an effort to avoid "value traps."

The S&P 500 SPX has risen 14.5% this year through Friday. All price changes in this article exclude dividends. Through Friday, 57% of stocks in the S&P 500 were up for 2025.

Among the decliners, there were 66 stocks that were down at least 20% for 2025. Narrowing that list further, 29 of the 66 have majority buy or equivalent ratings among analysts working for brokerage and research firms polled by LSEG.

Then we looked at consensus price targets. These 20 stocks, among those down 20% this year with majority buy ratings, have the highest implied 12-month upside potential from Friday's closing prices based on consensus price targets.

What about value traps?

Value stocks are generally considered to be those of slower-growing mature companies that trade at relatively low valuations to expected earnings or book value. The stock of a rapidly growing company might also be placed in the value camp by an investor who believes the stock to be underappreciated by the market. Some value stocks might feature attractive dividend yields.

A value trap could be a stock selected for a combination of a low valuation and a high dividend yield, with the "trap" being that it is so attractively priced because some investors see signs of trouble ahead. Downward pressure on the stock from here might reflect declining estimates for revenue or earnings or even a dividend cut.

So as a supplement to the screen above, here is the list again, in the same order, this time showing projected compound annual growth rates from calendar 2025 through 2027 for the companies' revenue and earnings per share. This second table also includes forward price-to-earnings ratios.

The projected growth numbers are based on consensus estimates among analysts polled by LSEG, with adjustments for companies whose fiscal years don't match the calendar. The P/E ratios are based on Friday's closing prices and consensus EPS estimates for the next 12 months.

Some of the stocks on the list pay dividends; the dividend yields are in the rightmost column.

For comparison, aggregate numbers for the full S&P 500 are at the bottom.
