Amazon.com (AMZN) Alibaba (BABA) and other e-commerce firms have been ordered by Chinese tax officials to hand over sales data, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Bloomberg described the requests as an attempt to prevent tax evasion by merchants who use the platforms to ship products abroad.
The platforms themselves are not being accused of any tax evasion, Bloomberg reported.
Amazon and Alibaba did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
