As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement.      In this article, we decided to focus on Iress'  ROE.    ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders.  In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity. AI is about to change healthcare. The formula for return on equity is:  Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Iress is:23% = AU$89m ÷ AU$387m (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025). The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year.  So, this means that for every A$1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of A$0.23. We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings.  Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or \"retain\", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits.  Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.  Iress' Earnings Growth And 23% ROE   To begin with, Iress seems to have a respectable ROE.   On comparing with the average industry ROE of 12% the company's ROE looks pretty remarkable.   As you might expect, the 16% net income decline reported by Iress is a bit of a surprise.  Therefore, there might be some other aspects that could explain this.  These include low earnings retention or poor allocation of capital.     That being said, we compared Iress' performance with the industry and were concerned when we found that while the company has shrunk its earnings, the industry has grown its earnings at a rate of 14% in the same 5-year period.   ASX:IRE Past Earnings Growth November 12th 2025 The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth.  The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in.   This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future.    Is IRE fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value  has everything you need to know.    Is Iress Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?    Looking at its three-year median payout ratio of 32% (or a retention ratio of 68%) which is pretty normal, Iress' declining earnings is rather baffling as one would expect to see a fair bit of growth when a company is retaining a good portion of its profits.  So there might be other factors at play here which could potentially be hampering growth. For example, the business has faced some headwinds.     In addition, Iress has been paying dividends over a period of at least ten years suggesting that keeping up dividend payments is way more important to the management even if it comes at the cost of business growth.      Looking at the current analyst consensus data, we can see that the company's future payout ratio is expected to rise to 65% over the next three years.   Consequently, the higher expected payout ratio explains the decline in the company's expected ROE (to 18%) over the same period.      Conclusion    In total, it does look like Iress has some positive aspects to its business.      Although, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a high ROE and and a high reinvestment rate. We believe that there might be some outside factors that could be having a negative impact on the business.       Having said that, looking at current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings growth rate is expected to see a huge improvement.
