Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Tuesday Amid Tech Rally Doubts

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down nearly 1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 1.3% lower in Tuesday's premarket activity as investors grew cautious on doubts about the tech-fueled rally in stocks.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 1.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.8%, and Nasdaq futures losing 1.4% before the start of regular trading.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman is slated to speak on Tuesday.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 2.4%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.5% lower, Ether ETF (EETH) was down 2.2%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was edging down by 0.6%.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) retreated 1%, the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was down 1.1%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

Insperity (NSP) stock was down more than 21% before the opening bell after the company swung to a Q3 adjusted loss and said it expects a Q4 loss. The company also cut its 2025 adjusted earnings forecast.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 1.6%, the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) declined by 1.6%, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was down 1.5%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) fell by 2.3%, and the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) was also 2.3% lower.

Grab Holdings (GRAB) shares were down more than 5% in recent premarket activity after the company reported flat Q3 earnings and lower-than-expected revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was down by 1%.

Crescent Energy (CRGY) stock was down more than 2% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company reported lower Q3 adjusted earnings.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) retreated by 0.6%, the Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was down 0.5% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 1.3%.

Royal Philips (PHG) stock was up nearly 3% premarket after the company reported higher Q3 adjusted income from continuing operations and reiterated its 2025 comparable sales growth guidance.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was down 1.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 1.7% higher.

Apollo Global Management (APO) shares were up more than 2% pre-bell after the company reported higher Q3 adjusted net income and revenue.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0 .1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was flat. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was flat, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) lost 1.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) fell 1.3%.

Tesla (TSLA) shares were down more than 2% pre-bell after shareholder Norges Bank Investment Management voted against the proposed $1 trillion compensation package for the electric vehicle maker's chief executive, Elon Musk, citing concerns Tuesday regarding the size of the package.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated 1.5% to $60.13 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was down 1.1% at $4.23 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund (USO) fell by 1.4%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) declined by 0.7%.

Gold futures for December retreated by 0.5% to $3,995.00 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures declined by 1.2% to $47.48 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was down by 0.6%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was nearly 1% lower.
