After such a large drop in price, Opendoor Technologies' price-to-sales (or \"P/S\") ratio of 1x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Real Estate industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.8x and even P/S above 9x are quite common. Recent times haven't been great for Opendoor Technologies as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies.   The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better.  If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price. In order to justify its P/S ratio, Opendoor Technologies would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.   If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 14%.   Still, lamentably revenue has fallen 66% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing.  So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.     Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 18%  as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company.  With the industry predicted to deliver 13% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.  With this information, we are not surprised that Opendoor Technologies is trading at a P/S lower than the industry.  However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term.  Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises.
