Shares of industrial and transportation companies ticked up ahead of earnings.
Shares of General Motors, General Electric and 3M, three of the bellwethers due to report earnings all rose.
Porsche said it would start talks with Chief Executive Oliver Blume about an early exit, and with former McLaren boss Michael Leiters about taking over.
Volvo expects the North American truck market to be slightly weaker next year as customers remain cautious, but Europe is expected to hold up better.
