Hertz said it would start to sell cars online, expanding its website from an online catalog to an e-commerce platform as part of a push to increase its retail presence.
The car-rental company on Tuesday said customers will be able to get a trade-in offer, view protection plans, pre-qualify to see personalized payments and secure credit approval through its website.
Hertz has been attempting to expand its retail channels. The company sells about a third of its former rental cars directly to consumers through its auto lots and website, but most of its vehicle sales still go through auto auctions or to dealers.
Chief Executive Gil West said the launch of online sales "marks a critical milestone in executing our strategy to make retail our primary car selling channel."
In August, the Estero, Fla., company said it would partner with Amazon Autos, allowing customers to buy cars directly through Amazon. Initially available in four cities, that partnership has now expanded to all Hertz Car Sales locations across the country.
