Broad Market Indicators
Broad-market exchange-traded fund IWM rose while IVV edged lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.2%.
US benchmark stock indexes were mixed in midday trading on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average adding to the previous session's record high as investors assessed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech in Rhode Island.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each added about 2.5%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) slipped 0.5%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) moved lower as well.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) gained 0.4%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was up 0.5%.
Financial
The Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 0.3%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), fell 0.2%.
Commodities
Crude oil gained 1.9%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) added 1.7%. Natural gas was up 0.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) rose 1%.
Gold on Comex added 0.8%, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) were up 0.8%. Silver rose 0.6%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) gained 0.3%.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was little changed. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) was down 0.2%, while iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) added 0.4%.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was down 0.4%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) lost 0.2%, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) climbed 1%.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was up 0.4%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) advanced as well; iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) eased 0.1%.
Industrial
Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) was flat. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were in the red.
Cryptocurrency
In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) added 0.6%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) was up 0.5%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) gained 1%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) rose 0.7%.
