Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Fall After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower Thursday. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was little changed.

US equity indexes declined while government bond yields increased after July's wholesale price inflation rate rose at the fastest pace in three years.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each fell about 0.8%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) dipped 0.4%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also moved lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) dropped 2.3%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was 0.8% down.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) shed 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) fell 0.4%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), rose 0.2%.

Commodities

Crude oil added 1.9%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 1.4%. Natural gas rose 0.3%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) gained 0.4%.

Gold fell 0.8% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) slipped 0.7%. Silver fell 1.6%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was down 1.4%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) dipped 0.8%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) also declined.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) lost 0.4%, and VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were mixed, with the latter falling 1.8%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose fractionally, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were mixed, with the latter easing 0.1%. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 0.1%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) shed 0.9%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were lower.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) dipped 4.2%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) fell 4.1%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) shed 4.3%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was down 4%.
