Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. announced the completion of the first stage of its renewable energy projects, bringing online seven solar and battery storage systems across three island grids. The projects, initiated in a 2018 competitive bidding process, add 260 megawatts of clean energy and 1,038 megawatt-hours of storage. Among these projects is the Hoohana Solar in Kunia, Oahu, with a capacity of 52 MW of solar power and 208 MWh of battery storage. Other projects include AES West Oahu Solar, Mililani 1 Solar, Waiawa Solar Power, AES Kuihelani, AES Waikoloa Solar, and Hale Kuawehi. Despite construction delays due to the pandemic and supply chain issues, Hawaiian Electric continues to push for renewable energy, reducing its oil usage by 57 million gallons annually and achieving 36% renewable energy generation across Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii Island.
