The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.1% higher in Thursday's premarket activity as markets traded mixed amid a focus on AI-driven gains at Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) and awaited June retail data.
US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures marginally lower, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures declining 0.2%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.1% before the start of regular trading.
Reports releasing at 8:30 am ET include the June national retail sales report, the weekly jobless claims bulletin, the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index for July, and the import and export prices report for June.
The business inventories bulletin for May will be released at 10 am ET, along with the NAHB Housing Market Index for July.
The weekly EIA natural gas report posts at 10:30 am ET.
Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler, San Francisco President Mary Daly, Governor Lisa Cook and Governor Christopher Waller speak on Thursday.
In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 1%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.9% lower, the ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) was up 1.4%, and the ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was up 1.7%.

Industrial
Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) advanced 0.2% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive.
Vertical Aerospace (EVTL) stock was up more than 7% before the opening bell after the company said it completed the first piloted airport-to-airport flight of a full-scale, winged tilt-rotor eVTOL designed for commercial use.

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.02%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.5% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell by 0.3%.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) shares were up more than 3% in recent premarket activity after the company reported higher Q2 earnings and net sales.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was down 0.3%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.4% higher.
Texas Capital Bancshares (TCBI) shares were up nearly 2% pre-bell Thursday after the company posted higher Q2 adjusted earnings and revenue.
Consumer
The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was flat. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) lost 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) were inactive.
Vertiv (VRT) shares were up more than 1% pre-bell after the company said that it has agreed to acquire the Great Lakes Data Racks & Cabinets family of companies for $200 million.
Health Care
The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) retreated 0.2%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was down 0.2% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was 0.2% higher.
Elevance Health (ELV) stock was down more than 2% premarket after the company cut its 2025 adjusted earnings forecast.
Energy
The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was down by 0.1%.
Commodities
Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up 0.4% at $66.63 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas advanced by 0.1% to $3.56 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) was 0.03% lower, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) gained 0.4%.
Gold futures for August retreated 0.8% to $3,330.90 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures were down nearly 0.2% at $38.04 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) declined by 0.8%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.2% lower.
