Momentus Inc., a U.S. commercial space company, has secured a $1.86 million Direct to Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with SpaceWERX, the innovation division of the U.S. Space Force. This contract facilitates the in-space flight demonstration of a cost-effective multi-spectral sensor suite designed for Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO), set for early 2026. Under this agreement, Momentus will showcase an internally developed RPO system featuring optical, infrared, and lidar sensors, combined with machine vision algorithms and advanced data fusion technologies. The demonstration, aimed at enhancing autonomous in-space operations, will occur on SpaceX's Transporter-16 rideshare mission, launching no earlier than February 2026. The initiative supports the U.S. Space Force's goals of advancing orbital servicing, satellite refueling, in-space structure assembly, and debris mitigation.
