Vodafone Group and AST SpaceMobile Inc. have announced the establishment of a new joint venture, SatCo, which will be headquartered in Luxembourg. This collaboration aims to deliver space-based cellular broadband connectivity across Europe, utilizing AST SpaceMobile's satellite constellation in low Earth orbit. The venture will integrate satellite services with existing 4G/5G terrestrial networks, providing secure and resilient connectivity for European citizens, businesses, and public sector organizations. With commercial launches expected in 2026, the initiative has already attracted interest from mobile operators in 21 EU member states and other European markets. SatCo's operations will support Europe's digital sovereignty by offering a unified platform for satellite connectivity, ensuring seamless coverage and automatic switching between space and land-based networks.
