SmartKem Inc. has announced the granting of a UK patent for a novel method in MicroLED display manufacturing. This new approach, which enhances efficiency and reduces material waste, involves patterning an organic thin-film transistor $(OTFT)$ backplane on top of a source wafer and selectively removing MicroLEDs. The patented process allows for the reuse of the source wafer, significantly cutting production costs compared to traditional monolithic display methods. This development adds to SmartKem's extensive IP portfolio, which includes 140 granted patents and 40 trade secrets.
