NuScale Power (SMR) said Wednesday it has launched research programs aimed at advancing an integrated energy system that can provide clean water and a means of hydrogen production.

The company said a single NuScale nuclear power module linked to a desalination system could yield 150 million gallons of clean water per day without generating carbon dioxide.

NuScale said it is also collaborating with the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to examine ways to extract safely transportable hydrogen from an inert salt drawn from water desalination byproducts.

Shares of the company were up more than 3% in recent premarket activity.
