The initiative, which has received approval from the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission, involves trimming trees and clearing vegetation along 1,200 miles of power lines by April 2026. This effort is part of a broader strategy to reduce power outages and improve public safety by maintaining clear areas around over 6,000 miles of power lines, revisiting municipalities every three to five years. Communities including Woonsocket, Cranston, Warwick, and Westerly will be affected during this period. The program also emphasizes community involvement, with activities such as donating wood chips to local environmental projects and supporting veterans' cemeteries maintenance. Residents will receive notifications in advance of any tree trimming activities in their areas.
