TAIPEI -- The University of Tokyo and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest semiconductor foundry, announced on Thursday that they have established and started operations of a joint research laboratory on university grounds for such purposes as advanced semiconductor research and human resource development.

According to the announcement, this is TSMC's first joint research laboratory with an overseas university. The laboratory will conduct research projects including on such topics as semiconductor materials, devices, processes and package design. Results of the research will be applied to TSMC's semiconductor development and manufacturing processes, and the university will make regular announcements.

The two parties began collaborating on advanced semiconductor research in 2019, and there are currently 21 ongoing projects. Since 2023, the u-niversity has been introducing specialized educational materials on advanced process design for use in its courses.

"Our goal is to establish this joint research center as a leading hub for semiconductor research in Japan and to accelerate our talent development efforts," TSMC said. "We will continue to collaborate and cooperate to create sustainable technologies with an eye on next generation."
