The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) prepared 17 briefings related to Macquarie Group (ASX:MQG) in the last 10 months, The Australian reported Sunday, citing documents released under Freedom of Information.

One of the briefing papers outlined the topics canvassed by ASIC when it met Macquarie Chief Executive Shemara Wikramanayake on Sept. 19, 2024, before the firm was fined AU$5 million.

The regulator flagged its interest in Macquarie's growing involvement in private and unlisted markets and highlighted "regulatory inconsistencies."

Some of the documents included "confidential information that an authority of a foreign government - a foreign regulator - has shared with ASIC on a confidential basis," said Haydar Tuncer, the regulator's senior lawyer.

Macquarie Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment by MT Newswires.
