President Trump had just welcomed the German chancellor to the White House when he began lashing out at Elon Musk. The ensuing storm eclipsed Friedrich Merz's inaugural visit.
While he lambasted the tech billionaire, Trump praised his guest, who mostly stood back and listened. Advisors who had feared a lecture on free speech or Germany's trade surplus were relieved. "You can't say the meeting got any public attention in the U.S.," said a German official. "But that wasn't the point. The point was to establish a relationship (between Merz and Trump), and that worked out very well."
