The rupture between President Trump and Elon Musk has captivated corporate America, prompting business leaders to check their phones between meetings and express alarm that the relationship between the two men had detonated.

Daniella Ballou-Aares--CEO of the Leadership Now Project, a business group--said she heard from several business leaders Thursday who initially seemed amused by the fight, but became concerned as the standoff escalated throughout the afternoon. The feud raises questions about the direction of the Republican party, she said, and has national security implications, given Musk's control of satellites at SpaceX.

"It's the culmination of the lawlessness and uncertainty that we've seen since Inauguration Day," Ballou-Aares said in an interview. "When you see the rule of law eroding, this is where it can all go."
