Ballard Power Systems agreed to supply California-based rail operator Sierra Northern Railway with 12 of its hydrogen engines to convert certain of its diesel-powered locomotives.
The Burnaby, British Columbia, fuel-cell manufacturer said Thursday that it will convert three of Sierra Northern's diesel-switching locomotives into hydrogen-fueled, zero-emission locomotives using 12 Ballard FCmove-XD engines.
In total, Ballard will deliver 1.5 megawatts of fuel-cell engines to the railroad operator in this year, which it says will support Sierra Northern's efforts to decarbonize its operations across California.
