Toyota Motor (TYO:7203), Honda Motor (TYO:7267), and other Japanese automakers will jointly develop AI-powered autonomous driving technology under a new government-backed framework, according to Nikkei Asia Review, citing the government.

The transport ministry is establishing this framework to facilitate collaboration among automakers on self-driving tech aided by artificial intelligence, said the news daily.

This initiative is part of Japan's broader strategy to promote software-defined vehicles and particularly focuses on AI-assisted driving, the report said.

The partners will discuss developing and commercializing AI for Level 4 self-driving and higher, including building AI infrastructure, fostering human resources, and establishing safety and international standards, added the report.
