Technology companies enjoyed a strong Tuesday, making up one of the broader market's stronger sectors during the session.
Micron shares climbed. The chipmaker said it shipped the first sample of a new chip designed for artificial-intelligence applications on smartphones.
Gains were widespread among big hardware firms. Intel, Nvidia and Western Digital each added more than 2%.
