Two Corpus Christi, Texas, Refineries Report Emissions -- OPIS

Two petroleum refineries in Corpus Christi reported hazardous material emissions and possible operational issues over the last two days, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality filings showed.

Valero Energy on Monday told the state environmental regulator that the West Plant at its 301,000 b/d Corpus Christi refinery lost electrical power supply to multiple pieces of equipment due to an unexpected third-party power disruption.

As a result, the refinery initiated a protective safety shutdown that included flaring to burn off excess gases as the incident interrupted routine operations, the company said.

Valero's Corpus Christi refinery on the Texas Gulf Coast along the Corp Christi Ship Channel comprises both its East and West plants. The West Plant processes sweet crude oil, sour crude oil and residual fuel oil while the East plant consumes mainly sour crude oil.

In addition, Flint Hills Resources reported flaring Sunday at the West Plant of its 350,000 b/d Corpus Christi refinery. The cause of the incident is under investigation, the company said.

The FHR Corpus Christi refinery, which is also made up of its East and West plants, produces jet fuel, low-sulfur gasoline and diesel that are distributed throughout the Midwest, Texas and the Southeast.
