Union Pacific said its president, Beth Whited, plans to transition to the role of strategic adviser, effective July 1.

Union Pacific on Friday said Whited, who has spent 37 years with the Omaha, Neb., freight railroad and became its first female president in August 2023, will remain an adviser through early 2026.

A Union Pacific representative said the company doesn't currently plan to fill the president position.

Whited was previously executive vice president of sustainability and strategy and chief human resources officer before she became president following the ouster of Lance Fritz after pressure from New York hedge fund Soroban Capital Partners. Jim Vena succeeded Fritz as chief executive as part of the shakeup.

Whited earned a base salary of nearly $842,000 and total compensation topping $6.5 million last year.
