Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was taken into custody Friday after being accused of trespassing at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in New Jersey.
Baraka ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security to leave the ICE center in Newark before he was taken into custody, according to Alina Habba, interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.
"He has willingly chosen to disregard the law," Habba said on X. "That will not stand in this state."
A campaign spokeswoman for Baraka, a Democrat who is running for governor, said she would provide more details when available.
"We are actively monitoring," she said.
