Southern Company, through Georgia Power, has announced the commencement of construction on 765 megawatts (MW) of new battery energy storage systems $(BESS)$ across Georgia, located in Bibb, Lowndes, Floyd, and Cherokee counties. This initiative, authorized by the Georgia Public Service Commission through the Integrated Resource Plan process, aims to enhance reliability and resiliency for the state's growing energy needs. The BESS projects are part of Georgia Power's strategy to integrate more renewable energy sources and provide quickly dispatchable capacity. Additionally, an extra 1,000 MW of battery storage is anticipated to be procured in the coming years. The company is also launching a Customer-Sited Solar Plus Storage Pilot to encourage residential and small commercial customers to add solar and storage resources. This pilot aims to secure an initial 50 MW of capacity, supporting the state's push towards more customer-sited renewable generation.
