Walt Disney's Marvel scored a strong box office showing for Thunderbolts, its latest superhero flick, which opened in the weekend's top spot with the third-highest domestic sales of the year.
Thunderbolts brought in an estimated $76 million in domestic box office sales, according to Comscore.
It's a good sign for Hollywood, which is still struggling to rebound from two strikes, production disruptions, and the rise of streaming. The weekend's overall total three-day domestic box office reached $145.6 million. So far this year, box office sales of nearly $2.5 billion are up 15.7% from the same time last year, according to Comscore.
Thunderbolts, starring Florence Pugh and Stebastian Stan, notched $86.1 million in ticket sales overseas, for an opening weekend global total of $162.1 million.
The weekend's second top movie was Warner Bros.' Sinners, which has sold $179.7 million in domestic tickets since its opening in April, according to Comscore.
