Unclear Where U.K. Can Go Forward as Trade Deal Emerges -- Market Talk

1053 ET - Details on a deal between the U.S. and U.K. are coming Thursday after President Trump made an earlier announcement, much is unclear for the U.K. side, J.P. Morgan's Allan Monks says in a research note. The analyst notes that it remains to be seen whether the U.K. can arrange an exemption from the baseline 10% tariff following subsequent negotiations. But he adds that with the U.K. turning to trade discussions with the EU, subsequent progress on key outstanding issues with the U.S. could become harder. "With the UK having broadly balanced goods trade with the US, a reasonably good political relationship, no real threat of retaliation from Westminster and extensive bilateral negotiations having taken place, it is not clear where the UK can go from here," says Monks.
