The brewer of Samuel Adams beer said it expects tariffs to cost it between $20 million and $30 million this year, including levies on imported aluminum as well materials imported from China for in-store displays.

Boston Beer said its sales to retailers fell 1% in the latest quarter. Company executives said beer sales were weaker than expected in part because of inflation, economic uncertainty and tumbling consumer confidence.

The escalating trade war has made it difficult to plan, executives said. The company is trying to parse which of the announced levies are real policy, which are posturing and which are part of long-range negotiations, they said.

Boston Beer said it is studying how much tolerance its consumers would have for price increases.
