Republic Services reported higher first-quarter profit as sales rose.

The Phoenix-based recycling and waste services company reported a first-quarter profit of $495 million, or $1.58 a share, compared with $454 million, or $1.44 a share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, per-share earnings were $1.58, above the $1.53 per share that analysts were expecting, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose to $4.01 billion from $3.86 billion a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast sales of $4.05 billion.

Chief Executive Jon Vander Ark said that topline results were impacted by sluggish cyclical volumes and winter weather.

"Our business continues to perform well even with increased volatility in the broader economy," he said.
