Shares of energy companies rose alongside oil futures amid optimism about a ceasefire in the trade war between the U.S. and China.
West Texas Intermediate rose 1.6% to $63.15 a barrel. Shares of Halliburton slid after the oil-services giant warned that tariffs posed a threat to its second-quarter bottom line after it logged a sharp drop in first-quarter earnings. Halliburton's chief financial officer said the firm had a flexible supply chain but needed more details on the exact tariff levels before making adjustments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed back on a U.S. proposal to recognize Russia's control of Crimea as part of a cease-fire agreement, throwing into doubt President Trump's efforts to bring a quick end to the war.
