Meta Platforms (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified Monday in federal court in the antitrust trial over the US Federal Trade Commission's claims that the company purchased Instagram and WhatsApp to create a social-networking monopoly, multiple news outlets reported.
The acquisitions "established entry barriers that for more than a decade protected Meta's dominance," FTC attorney Daniel Matheson said in an opening statement, according to Reuters.
The antitrust enforcer is seeking to push the company to restructure or divest these platforms, Bloomberg reported.
Meta cites increasing competition from ByteDance's TikTok, Alphabet's (GOOG) YouTube and Apple's (AAPL) messaging app, Reuters reported.
