President Trump said he is looking at some tariff exemptions to help car companies and said he exempted smartphones and certain electronics from the tariffs in order to help U.S. smartphone makers, including Apple. He provided few details.

"I speak to Tim Cook, I helped Tim Cook recently, and that whole business," Trump said, referencing Apple's chief executive Tim Cook. "I don't want to hurt anybody but the end result is we're going to get to the position of greatness for our country," Trump said in the Oval Office.

Smartphones, computers, memory chips and other electronics will be exempt from Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs, according to guidance published late Friday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
