Discount Retailers to Likely See Similar Gains As in Great Recession -- Market Talk

1442 ET - Discount retailers will benefit from similar sales trends as those seen during the Great Recession if the U.S. falls into a prolonged recession, Jefferies analysts say in a research note after analyzing same store sales trends due to the uncertainty around tariffs. Grocery Outlet Holding and Dollar General performed the best during the crisis from 2008 to 2009, with Walmart at the end of the gainers list. However, the retail giant has significantly improved its grocery offer since 2008 and 2009 and could, therefore, fare better during the current macroeconomic environment, the analysts add.
