Canada's 'snowbirds' turn cool to Florida after Trump threats, tariffs

Many Canadian “Snowbirds” are putting their vacation homes in Florida and other warm-weather U.S, states up for sale in the wake of the hostility that President Trump has shown toward Canada since his inauguration. The threat of U.S. sanctions on goods made north of the border has led to a Canadian boycott of U.S. made goods ranging from fresh produce to whiskey and motorcycles. Signs of an exodus of Snowbirds from Florida suggests that the list of boycotted goods now includes vacation houses in a state that many Canadians once thought as a welcoming home away from home. As an apparent consequence, an already-soft real estate market in some parts of Florida is growing even weaker, with a glut of properties on the market at reduced prices. An anemic Canadian dollar vs the greenback, surging Florida insurance costs due to climate change and other factors are contributing to the trend, helping to convince many Snowbirds to rethink their retirement plans.
