Traders are paring their expectations for more volatility ahead.

The Cboe Volatility Index, known as Wall Street's fear gauge because it measures investors' expectations for where the S&P 500 index is headed, tumbled to 38.25 midafternoon Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the index closed at its highest level since the Covid crash.
