HSBC, StanChart's Returns Might Support Shares After Meltdown -- Market Talk

0812 GMT - HSBC's and Standard Chartered's resilient shareholder returns could provide support to share performance after the pullback triggered by U.S. President Trump's tariffs, China's response, and fears of a global recession, JPMorgan says in a research note. Analysts calculate an around 300 basis point downside to 2025 return on tangible equity estimates for both banks if fears were to materialize, leading to rate cuts, lower transactional banking revenue, and higher credit costs. HSBC and StanChart are more vulnerable to a global recession scenario than local Hong Kong or China peers, JPM says. HSBC shares in London edge down 0.6%, while StanChart's slip 0.9%, extending losses for a fourth session. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
