Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that Canada will match US tariffs on passenger vehicles and impose a 25% tariff on US vehicles that don't comply with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, media outlets reported Thursday.

However, these tariffs will not affect auto parts crossing the border, nor will they apply to Mexican vehicle content, he said at a press conference in Ottawa, according to the reports.

Carney added that his government is working on a plan to help automakers avoid these counter-tariffs if they continue production and investment in Canada.

The countermeasures are intended to have "maximum impact in the US and minimum impact here in Canada," Carney was quoted as saying.
